Of course those who missed the story while Edwards was running for President have a legitimate excuse. Because Edwards ran on the Democratic ticket, news of his affair with Rielle Hunter and the subsequent child it produced was thought insignificant enough the main stream media decided voters needn't know about it. Now that the cat is way out of the bag and Edwards is persona non grata in the DNC, the Times hangs out the dirty laundry.
The premise of the Times article is the downfall of Edwards who is now seeking to acknowledge the child to bring some sort of closure to the whole mess. Buried in the article are a few rather salacious pieces of gossip being shopped in a book by Andrew Young. Young, you may recall, was an Edward aid who was so devoted to Edwards he was willing to sign an affidavit stating that he was the father of the child. The Times examined Young's book proposal and reveal the following bits from the book:
He said Mr. Edwards pleaded with him to accept responsibility falsely, saying that would reduce the story to one of a political aide’s infidelity.
Mr. Young asserts that he assisted the affair by setting up private meetings between Mr. Edwards and Ms. Hunter. He wrote that Mr. Edwards once calmed an anxious Ms. Hunter by promising her that after his wife died, he would marry her in a rooftop ceremony in New York with an appearance by the Dave Matthews Band.A wealthy trial lawyer and Edwards supporter Fred Baron claimed he paid to move Rielle Hunter and paid her for her silence. The payments made to Hunter are being investigated by a grand jury panel. Baron has since passed away. Baron is mentioned in the Young book proposal and is alleged to be a bit more involved:
Mr. Baron is described as going to great lengths to help a knowing and eager Mr. Edwards conceal from the public both his affair with Ms. Hunter and his paternity of her daughter. At one point, Mr. Young wrote, Mr. Edwards asked Mr. Baron if he could find a doctor who would falsify a DNA report.YUCK, good thing the media decided to protect a guy who would plan his next wedding while his wife was suffering from cancer. I would be thrilled to have a President who would seek to falsify a DNA report, how about you? Of course, this all comes from a man who lied about being the father of the child to begin with and now suddenly has a book to sell. Who knows whether any of this is true. Bottom line, however, John and Elizabeth Edwards know Edwards fathered this child. Nothing can be gained from keeping up the charade he did not. Denying the obvious not only damages Edwards but his wife Elizabeth for participating in the deception.
