The Art of Indecision

The New York Times has a piece today lauding Obama's broad taste in art. The Obama's decorator Michael Smith went to visit the curator of modern and contemporary art at the National Gallery in Washington looking for art to be loaned to the Obamas for the White House. He had a list of preferred artists and was able to choose from pieces in storage. Here is a slideshow of some of the artwork selected.

The first piece in the slideshow is described by NYT's writer Carol Vogel as a humorous choice. This piece of word art by California artist Ed Ruscha is titled, "I Think I’ll ... ” Vogel explains "it deals with the subject of indecision." You don't say! I guess humor is in the eye of the beholder.

I happen to draw and paint and, generally speaking, I appreciate most art. Though the Obamas chose pieces that I would never have been drawn to, they might work with what their decorator had envisioned. I am generally not a fan of modern art but have seen it work perfectly in the right setting. There is, however, one piece that I would have immediately chosen myself; The Degas bronze sculpture is lovely. There are a number of paintings by Richard Diebenkorn that would probably better suit my style, but the colors in the one chosen for the living quarters are beautiful. I do love the colors in the piece that Vogel describes as the humorous choice, I think I would have been decisive enough to have left it in the warehouse. That said, I would be curious to see the selected artwork in their respective settings to see how they work.

  1. You can never go wrong with Degas.  But I'm not big on modern art either.  It's a little to abstract for me.
